Ugly Ikea Kitchen Lawsuit

In a recent lawsuit filed in Manhattan, New York, a wealthy Icelandic couple is being sued for what complainants argue is an “ugly kitchen”. The so-called ugly IKEA kitchen lawsuit was filed on behalf of Paramount Realty Group of America Corp., which claims the Icelandic couple installed an unsuitable cheap IKEA kitchen into a luxury apartment the realty group leased.
The couple, Icelandic investing mogul Jon Asgeir Johannesson and his wife Ingibjorg Palmadottir, are possibly facing $52,000 in damages. They own the 16th-floor apartment in the Gramercy Hotel building, where their tenant, Paramount, paid $312,000 last year in rent.
“The kitchen installed was not reasonably satisfactory… as it did not rise to the level of a kitchen suitable for a property located at 50 Gramercy Park North,” according to the lawsuit. “The kitchen installed is manufactured by IKEA, which is generally known to offer low budget furniture.”
In 2007, Johannesson and Palmadottir reportedly paid more than $10 million in a co-op deal for the entire 16th-floor. Shortly afterwards, the couple then purchased the duplex penthouse above.
The plaintiff claims the ugly kitchen has been a source of embarrassment, as it has been the subject of remarks by guests.
50 Gramercy Park North residents do have it good, as do hotel guests. Amongst available services to residents is bellman service, room service, childcare, messenger service, technical support for computers and televisions, general repair service, and fresh flower service.
There are 23 residences, all of which are sold out. Most of the units claim to have been designed by English architect John Pawson, best known for designing London’s Cannelle Cake Shop and several Calvin Klein retail locations.
In reference to 50 Gramercy Park North, Pawson said, “the main thing about my architecture and what I try to achieve is really to make people feel good in places. I’m more interested in getting the bones right so that you have a framework in which you feel comfortable.”
