Guide to Thai Cookware
By Calum Macleod - Ezinearticles
Thai food is a very popular cuisine across the world. To make perfect Thai food, it is not essential to have all of the traditional tools, but it will make it a lot easier and more authentic. Here are a few choice items that could enrich your cooking experience.
Herbs and spices are integral to getting the right flavors for your Thai food. A handy thing to have in the kitchen is a pestle and mortar. These allow you to grind herbs down and make curry pastes out of them. Pesto gained its name from its ingredients being ground using a pestle. A good pestle and mortar set should be very hard wearing so that it crushes the ingredients without leaving any of itself behind.
An excellent aid for steaming or heating food is a banana leaf. These leaves have been used for centuries to prepare food. They can imbue the food placed inside with a fruit flavor. It's a bit of an all in one item as it can also be used to lay out or present food. They can give your Thai meals that extra bit of authenticity. Another thing that can add to the overall eastern ambiance is a bamboo basket which is a traditional way to serve rice in Thailand. The kind of rice you want for Thai food is of the sticky variety. This is a kind of sweet rice and for Asian cuisine should be steamed for extra authenticity.
If you have ever been to a Thai restaurant then you may have already seen a Thai fish platter serving dish. It is shaped like a fish and has a section in the bottom for placing either hot coals or tea tree lights. Then the fish is placed on top of this to keep it warm before eating.
